(NEW FRONTIER NEWS)- A concept car Hyundai calls ‘Elevate’ was unveiled at the 2019 CES in Las Vegas.
The car’s “5 degrees of freedom,” referencing the 5 different joints on the legs connecting to the wheel allow the legs to fold up, so that it can be driven like any other car, but when unfolded, the walking mechanism allows it to travel almost anywhere.
According to Hyundai, the car’s design was designed for natural disaster sites, and “is uniquely capable of both mammalian and reptilian walking gaits, allowing it to move in any direction. The legs also fold up into a stowed drive-mode… this allows Elevate to drive at highway speeds just like any other vehicle. But no other can climb a five-foot wall, step over a five-foot gap, walk over diverse terrain, and achieve a 15-foot wide track width, all while keeping its body and passengers completely level.”
According to John Suh, the VP and head of Hyundai Cradle it could also be used to accommodate those with physical disabilities. “People living with disabilities worldwide … could hail an autonomous Hyundai Elevate that could walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow their wheelchair to roll right in. The possibilities are limitless.”
A statement from a design manager for Elevate’s partner, Sundberg-Ferrer, which was founded in 1934 says “Imagine a car stranded in a snow ditch just ten feet off the highway being able to walk or climb over the treacherous terrain, back to the road potentially saving its injured passengers – this is the future of vehicular mobility.”
Elevate, a fully electric vehicle with a modular design enables the cabin to be swapped and customized, which could potentially open it up for military use.
There is no date set for a commercial rollout.
