(NEW FRONTIER NEWS)- A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck near the island of New Caledonia Wednesday prompting fears of a tsunami.

The 7.5 magnitude quake shook about 168 kilometers (104 miles) east of Tadine, a small town on the loyalty islands near New Caledonia, at about 10 kilometers (6 miles) of depth, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center sent out a warning of a tsunami in the southern Pacific Ocean.

New Caledonia and Vanuatu could see waves of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) in height.

Fiji could see waves as high 1 meter (3 feet) in some places along its coast.\

Two aftershocks were recorded by USGS. One of the aftershocks had a magnitude of 5.9.

New Caledonia is a special collectivity of France with over 200,000 residents.
